Over the years photographing families around Sioux Falls, I’ve found a few locations that I return to again and again. While there are many beautiful parks and hidden gems around the area, these are the spots I know best and the ones I can always count on for beautiful variety, great light, and a relaxed experience.

Arrowhead Park | Sioux Falls, SD
If I had to choose one location that I could photograph at over and over again, it would be Arrowhead Park.
This place is my ride-or-die for family sessions. I love how much variety it offers in one location. I know all of the little spots that photograph beautifully, which allows us to create a gallery with a mix of scenery without ever needing to rush from place to place.
From tree-lined paths and open fields to beautiful pockets of nature, Arrowhead gives us so many different backdrops while still feeling peaceful and natural. The light here is beautiful, especially during those evening sessions when everything starts to glow.
One of my favorite things about Arrowhead is that every session can feel completely different depending on the season, the weather, and your family’s personality. It’s a location I know well, and that means I already have a plan for where to go, where the best light will be, and how to keep things flowing.
Lake Alvin | Near Harrisburg, SD
For families who love a more natural, outdoorsy feel, Lake Alvin is another one of my favorite locations.
The tall grasses, trees, and open spaces create a beautiful backdrop for classic fall family photos. It has that peaceful nature feel while still being close enough to Sioux Falls for an easy drive.
One of my favorite things about Lake Alvin is that it gives us a little more variety than a typical nature location. We can capture those warm, cozy fall photos surrounded by trees and grass, but we can also incorporate the beach area for something a little more playful and unique.
Whether your family loves exploring, walking along the water, or just soaking in those quiet moments together, Lake Alvin gives us lots of opportunities for natural, connected images.
Palisades State Park | Garretson, SD
While it’s a little farther of a drive, Palisades State Park is absolutely worth mentioning.
The dramatic rock formations, water, and natural landscape create a stunning backdrop that feels completely different from many of the other locations around Sioux Falls.
This is a great option for families who want something a little more adventurous or who love the idea of a location with a little more character. The only downside is that the drive makes it a little less convenient for some families, especially with younger children, but the scenery is beautiful.
Other Beautiful Sioux Falls Area Locations
There are so many wonderful parks and outdoor spaces around Sioux Falls, and I love exploring new places from time to time. Some locations work beautifully for certain families, seasons, or session ideas.
But when it comes to fall family photos, these three locations are the ones I find myself coming back to most often. They offer beautiful scenery, variety, and the flexibility needed to create a gallery that feels like your family.
